About the SMART Defense Fellowship

The Science, Mathematics and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship for Service Program is an opportunity for students pursuing a graduate degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines to receive a full scholarship and be gainfully employed upon degree completion.

All awardees must be;

  • a U.S. citizen at time of application,
  • 18 years of age or older as of August 1, the year of application
  • able to participate in summer internships at Department of Defense laboratories,
  • willing to accept post-graduate employment with the Department of Defense,
  • a student in good standing with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (as calculated by the SMART application) and,
  • pursuing a graduate degree in one of the disciplines listed on the SMART Fellowship website.
